Wine has been in existence for eons and it shows in written records that the love for it is ancient. One concept has it that the fermentation of alcohol started sometime between 10,000 to 8,000 BC, thanks to the transformation from nomadic to a more rigid culture. Because people were staying in one area, they started putting forward crops that eventually lead to the production of wine.
There is actually no bottles left from that early period, but there is one assortment that dates back farther than any of us would ever remember or were even born. Known as Römerwein, or the Speyer wine bottle, it’s said to have been at least 1,650 years old.

This wine dates back to the 4th century, ultimately between 325 & 359 AD. The 1.5-liter glass vessel was found during the recess of a Roman nobleman’s monument in modern-day Germany.
If you’re keen to know what wine this old one smells or even flavors like, experts still have no knowledge about that. It is similarly unpredictable what would occur to the liquid if it were exposed to air, so it has been kept and sealed with a hard stopper of wax and olive oil.
So whatever alcohol was in there is perhaps long gone. This extraordinary history is now on exhibition at the Historical Museum of the Palatinate, Speyer, Germany.
