How To Write A Summary – Simplified Steps

Summary writing goes much deeper into the writing of the English Language. Summaries are written to write in short a lengthy passage, thesis or a write up in a more definitive and informative manner. It is the use of words outside of the main content to express exactly what the content is about.

During studies, summaries can also be a great tool to recollect the things we have studied. It also aids in easy expression and delivery. When writing a summary do not be bias, or include analysis or personal opinions, everything should come from the passage.

How To Write A Summary – The Simplest But Best Way To Do It

When writing or drafting a summary, it is vital to focus all on the most important parts of the content for which you’re summarizing. It’s supposed to be brief and understandable.

Things To Consider

✔It is important that you use your own words, phrases and statements to express yourself.

✔You must not include any irrelevant information aside from the most important ones. Never forget that the summary of which you’re writing should be brief than a paraphrase.

✔The main idea or the central idea of the passage or content should not change. It should have the same idea but a different structure.

✔You must write only the most important points and supporting ideas. No unnecessary use of words as the summary is meant to be short.

How To Write

✅Read the passage over and over again till you understand it very well. Make sure that, the passage is well understood without any errors.

✅Put down your most important points and supporting points not in full but it should be brief and understandable. If it is lengthy, you can decide to put your points in sections and make a shortlist for each point. Bridging up the points will largely help you to write the summary much better and freely than without the points. It also helps you to be able to chip in what’s so important from what’s less important.

✅Next, write your summary off-head without looking through the original content or else you’ll end up copying the entire passage again. So the best way to do this is, write it from your mind but it should carry the same idea as the original passage.

✅It is also advisable to use transition words like a along with, eventually, and, in addition to, first, second, both-and, furthermore, moreover, similarly, for example, as well as, finally, lastly, additionally etc.

✅Getting to the bottom, recheck your written summary and the original passage/content and see if there are plagiarism or it’s free form copy and paste. This step could also be used in place of ‘proofreading. If you realise there is plagiarism within it, you might want to make adjustments. Also, if you realise that the passage is lengthier than you imagined, you should go back to it and make adjustments too. Since you want to look professional, it is worth the effort.
